Youth Voices Rise at COP29: Uzbekistan Pavilion Highlights Tradition and Sustainability

Baku, Azerbaijan, 15th Nov 2024 - The 29th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP29) is currently underway from November 11 to 22, 2024, bringing together 198 member countries to evaluate progress and discuss multifaceted strategies in tackling climate change. This year, Uzbekistan is making a notable impact with its unique pavilion design and diverse engagement agenda.

Uzbekistan’s pavilion at COP29 reflects the country’s deep cultural and historical roots, integrating traditional principles and technologies that have long sustained its communities. The pavilion is modeled after the traditional hOVLI, an open courtyard central to Uzbek homes for generations. With a focus on blending nature and built space, the design features lush greenery and climbing vines that provide natural shade, symbolizing harmony with the environment. The use of traditional materials and ancient construction methods reflects Uzbekistan's commitment to eco-friendliness and sustainability.

The conference, spanning two weeks, features a comprehensive program that includes a High-Level Plenary, Global Leaders Summit on Climate Action, Executive Board meetings, Coordination meetings, and forums on youth climate action. Other key events include the 17th Nairobi Work Programme Focus Forum and roundtable discussions covering a wide range of topics such as green energy, technology and innovation, food security, biodiversity, and gender equality.

Uzbekistan’s Ministry of Water Resources, Ministry of Energy, and Ministry of Economic Development and Finance have taken an active role in organizing over 20 events within the Uzbekistan Pavilion. This includes several bilateral and multilateral meetings, as well as signing agreements with regional and international partners and donors, showcasing a dynamic approach to climate action.

Among the young voices at COP29, one stood out. Jason Lee, a Grade 11 student from Springfield Commonwealth Academy in South Korea, represented the nation’s youth as a delegate. He joined global youth leaders in various forums to discuss pressing climate issues, emphasizing the importance of proactive measures to combat climate change.

Jason engaged directly with CEOs and industry leaders, delivering a compelling speech on the critical need for enhanced climate action. He highlighted the role of youth in advocating for sustainable practices and policy changes, stressing that the younger generation must be included in decision-making processes to ensure a livable future.

“The climate crisis is not just a future problem; it is happening now. We, the youth, are here to demand change because our future depends on the actions taken today,” Jason stated passionately during one of the youth sessions.

COP29 continues to be a platform where young leaders like Jason Lee can voice their concerns and contribute to shaping the global climate agenda. The active involvement of youth delegates reflects a growing recognition of their vital role in driving sustainable solutions and holding leaders accountable for their commitments to fighting climate change.

As the conference progresses, the collaborative efforts of countries like Uzbekistan and the strong advocacy of young leaders serve as a hopeful reminder of the global commitment to a sustainable future.
