United States, 3rd Oct 2026 - Author and retired pastor Jim Hinman announces the forthcoming release of his deeply researched historical non-fiction work, "The Story of James W. Seward and the Underground Railroad: And the Bristol Hill Church."
Set against the turbulent backdrop of antebellum America, the book brings to light the extraordinary and poignant story of James Watkins Seward, a young free African American man connected to the historic Bristol Hill Congregational Church in Volney, New York. Drawing from rare archival letters written to prominent abolitionist Gerrit Smith and Seward's stark dictated confession recorded before his 1841 execution in Missouri, Hinman examines the moral complexities, systemic oppression, and hidden acts of courage that defined Seward's short life.
The narrative explores a critical question of American history: was Seward merely an unfortunate man caught in cycles of desperation and crime, or was he a silent protector who refused to compromise Underground Railroad networks even when facing the gallows?
"James’s story matters because it speaks to the immense resilience of those forced to prove their own humanity in a divided nation," states Hinman. "Separated by 130 years, our connection through the Bristol Hill Church inspired me to ensure his true voice and legacy are finally heard."
In keeping with the historical mission of the project, 100% of all author proceeds from the book are dedicated directly to Bristol Hill Church to support community heritage and historical preservation.
"The Story of James W. Seward and the Underground Railroad: And the Bristol Hill Church" will be available across major digital and print retailers worldwide, including Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and global bookstore networks.
